Plot Summary
Gattu (Rajkummar Rao) is a carefree and aimless youth who lives with his parents in a middle-class neighborhood in Lucknow. He has a crush on his neighbor Binny (Shruti Haasan), who is also his childhood friend. However, according to the tradition of their locality, all the girls are considered as sisters by the boys. Gattu is afraid to express his feelings for Binny, as he fears that he will be ridiculed by his friends and family.
Things get complicated when Gattu's friend Bhura (Herry Tangri) drops Binny home on his bike and Gattu's father (Darshan Jariwala) sees them. He spreads the rumor that Binny and Bhura are having an affair, which angers Binny's brother (Ninad Kamat) and grandmother (Kamlesh Gill). They decide to get Binny married to a suitable boy as soon as possible. Gattu is heartbroken and decides to confess his love to Binny before it is too late.
Gattu seeks the help of his friend Rahul (Gautam Gulati), who is a rich and handsome NRI. Rahul agrees to pose as Binny's fake boyfriend and create a scene at her engagement, so that Gattu can swoop in and save her. However, things do not go as planned and Gattu ends up kidnapping Binny on the day of her engagement. He takes her to a temple and tries to convince her to elope with him. But Binny is not ready to run away from her family and rejects Gattu's proposal.
Gattu realizes that he has made a mistake and returns Binny to her home. He apologizes to her family and tells them the truth about his feelings for Binny. He also reveals that Rahul was his friend and not Binny's boyfriend. Binny's family is shocked and angry at Gattu's actions, but they also appreciate his honesty and courage. They decide to forgive him and give him a chance to prove his worth. They challenge him to earn enough money in one month to buy a house for himself and Binny.
Gattu accepts the challenge and starts working hard to earn money. He takes up various odd jobs and even participates in a singing contest. He manages to save enough money to buy a small house for himself and Binny. He also wins the singing contest and gets a chance to perform at a concert with a famous singer. He dedicates his song to Binny and proposes to her in front of the audience. Binny accepts his proposal and they hug each other. The film ends with Gattu and Binny getting married with the blessings of their families.
