FELS loan recipients must sign a promissory note that will require them to seek loan forgiveness through employment in an approved position or repay the loan in cash. Loan forgiveness is described in the FELS Rules. Generally, a loan for one academic year will be forgiven for one year of full-time employment. Loans will accrue interest at the rate of 7% per year from the date of the loan disbursement. Recipients cannot receive FELS funding concurrently with other state-funded loans.

Who's this for? According to Upstart's website, applicants with a credit history should apply with a minimum credit score of 300 (though, Upstart also accepts applicants with no credit history). Sometimes, a potential borrower may have a low credit score because they have extremely limited credit activity. Other times, a lack of credit history may result in them having no credit score at all. Just keep in mind that if you're approved for the loan with a lower (or no) credit score, you may be subject to a higher interest rate.
Who's this for? The minimum credit score required to apply for a Happy Money personal loan is 550, making the lender a good place to start for those who have a poor credit score and are most concerned with debt consolidation. Happy Money personal loans can actually only be used for debt consolidation and qualified borrowers can apply for a minimum of $5,000 and a maximum of $40,000.
OneMain Financial consumer loans are offered in 44 states (we do not lend in AK, AR, CT, DC, MA, RI, and VT). Loan proceeds cannot be used for postsecondary educational expenses as defined by the CFPB's Regulation Z such as college, university or vocational expense; for any business or commercial purpose; to purchase securities; or for gambling or illegal purposes.
Another feature that makes this lender a little more flexible is the ability to secure your loan with collateral. Personal loans are generally unsecured debt, meaning you can borrow the money outright without having to offer up something of value. But with secured loans, a borrower essentially uses another asset as a "promise" that if they fail to repay their loan in full, the lender can seize that asset from them as collateral. Not only does OneMain Financial give you this option, but doing so also lets you potentially receive an even lower interest rate. Plus, borrowers can actually choose the date their monthly payments are due.
You can still get approved for a personal loan with a less-than-stellar credit score. Having a personal loan can help boost your credit score by strengthening your credit mix, but you must remember to make your payments on time each month. Late and missed payments show up as negative marks on your credit report.
To determine which personal loans are the best for consumers with a credit score of 580 or lower, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of U.S. personal loans offered by both online and brick-and-mortar banks, including large credit unions. When possible, we chose loans with no origination or sign-up fees, but we also included options for borrowers with lower credit scores on this list. Some of those options have origination fees.
The rates and fee structures advertised for personal loans are subject to fluctuate in accordance with the Fed rate. However, once you accept your loan agreement, a fixed-rate APR will guarantee your interest rate and monthly payment will remain consistent throughout the entire term of the loan. Your APR, monthly payment and loan amount depend on your credit history and creditworthiness. To take out a loan, many lenders will conduct a hard credit inquiry and request a full application, which could require proof of income, identity verification, proof of address and more.

Borrowers must, first and foremost, be eligible for VA home loans. This means they must have satisfied the service requirements and have enough "entitlement" available to be considered for a VA loan. Entitlement is a word used to refer to the amount the VA will guarantee for a particular veteran borrower.
The lender's handbook states that VA home loan benefits are to be used mainly for owner-occupied properties. The VA lists single-family homes, VA-approved condos, townhouses and multi-family homes (up to four units per borrower) as properties generally eligible for VA financing. (There may be additional qualifying requirements.) The VA also guarantees the financing of manufactured homes if they are attached to a permanent foundation; but not all lenders offer VA loans for modular homes.
By law, VA borrowers must occupy the homes they finance. VA borrowers must verify that they will occupy their homes within a reasonable time. For most, this means within 60 days after closing. Borrowers who are deployed away from home may receive an extension of up to 12 months. In special situations, the spouse may take occupancy of the home if the borrower is deployed. VA Streamline refinance loans require only that the borrower occupied the home in the past.
VA-eligible borrowers must qualify for the loans they obtain. Veterans (and co-borrowers, if joint) must have ready and ample income and satisfactory credit. Lenders are given some flexibility to decide whether a borrower is a safe credit risk within VA guidelines. VA-approved lenders may set their own credit score minimums. The VA recommends borrowers have no more than 41% debt-to-income ratio and at least enough residual income to cover typical living expenses. VA Streamline refinance loans may not require income and credit re-qualifying.
Alternative loans are not for everyone. You should only seek to borrow an alternative loan after other types of financial aid have been exhausted. Your eligibility is determined by the cost of attendance minus other financial aid or the annual loan maximum amount as determined by the lender.Because alternative loans are not guaranteed by the federal government, they must be insured privately. This extra cost is passed on to the borrower in the form of higher fees and interest rates. In addition, the lender will look at your credit history as well as other factors to determine if they will lend to you. You may be denied by one lender and approved by another because of the different ways the lender interprets your information.
Eligibility requirements vary from lender to lender. Most alternative loans require a co-signer for the loan if your credit history and annual income do not meet the lender's standards. In addition, you may be required to meet citizenship requirements or provide a co-signer who meets citizenship requirements. You must be admitted and enrolled in at least half time in a degree seeking program. Other eligibility requirements may apply depending on the lender. You are urged to choose a lender after researching the lenders terms and requirements.
